I'm not sure if there is an original source fo the solution presented here since it's not the one from the Galperin paper. I found it independently, but certainly not first. I think it's the most natural approach one might take given the problem statement, as corroborated by the fact that one like this is referenced in the NYT wordplay blog linked above, as well as the fact that many solutions people sent my way in this last week had this flavor.
